When the Psychedelic Experience Doesn’t Change You

What happens when it feels like nothing happened, or like nothing’s changed ?

In the current psychedelic culture, people often speak about their experiences as if the substance itself is the agent of change. As if the medicine, the altered state, the insights that come with — are the things that do the work.

So when the experience or its impact doesn’t feel impactful; when it’s confusing or unremarkable - when it is “not what I hoped for” - disappointment or even self recrimination creeps in.

It didn’t work. Me and my life aren't better. The breakthrough didn’t occur.

But what if that kind of breakthrough was never meant to happen ?

What if it’s not the medicine’s job to have done all the work ?

What if the journey, no matter how luminous or underwhelming, is not where transformative impact happens.  What if it more realistically directs a status quo disruption so that you can get to work ?

Non-ordinary states can be breathtaking and inspiring, bringing sensations of dissolution, love, terror or unity, sometimes through archetypal landscapes. They can rearrange perception in a single night.

But what current culture and media are selling, just isn’t true. The vision you had  is not the same as embodiment. The catharsis you felt won’t build capacity.

Your cosmic life changing insight is not its integration. It doesn’t change a life.

Your nervous system, personality structure, the conscious and unconscious defensive mechanisms you’ve built internally across a lifetime — these do not reorganize because of one expanded state. They reorganize when you choose to show up to reorganize.

Medicine absolutely can illuminate things for us.  It can spotlight shadows, loosen what is rigid and tighten what’s too loose.
It can point to what is armored and invite backbone where there’s been none.

Medicine excels at bringing humans to thresholds and edges, at releasing our grips on what no longer serves.

Only you can change your life.
